Diet for kidney disease – eGFR <60
If your eGFR is less than 60, your kidneys are not functioning properly and you should immediately adopt a diet which help to reduce excess load of nitrogenous waste, salt and toxins on your kidney. The kidneys are primarily responsible for detoxifying blood and eliminating nitrogenous wastes, excess fluid and toxins from your body. It also helps to maintain a healthy balance of water, salt and minerals such as sodium, potassium and phosphorus in your blood.
So what
happens when your kidney is not functioning properly?
Impaired kidney fails to filter nitrogenous waste, salt
and toxins from your body leading to their accumulation. This may cause
1.
edema or swelling of feet and ankles
2.
Muscle cramps
3.
Shortness of breath
4.
Weakness and fatigue
5.
Hypertension or high Blood pressure
6.
Sleep disturbances and many other
symptoms
Causes of
kidney disease and how to prevent it?
Since Diabetes or High blood sugar and High bloodpressure are currently the most common causes of kidney disease, controlling
these parameters is crucial to prevent kidney disease.
Diagnosis of
Kidney Disease?
Kidney disease can be diagnosed with the help of Kidney Function tests. Measurements of serum creatinine, urine ACR (Albumin to Creatinine Ratio ) and GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) are all part of your kidney function test. Therefore, kidney function tests should be performed on a regular basis for those with diabetes, hypertension and people over 65.
Early detection of Kidney disease can help to minimize further deterioration and easy management of disease.
Diet for
Kidney Disease
Once you are diagnosed with kidney disease, it is
better to see a specialized dietician who may help you create a Kidney friendly
diet plan and modify it on a regular basis depending on your improvement. A kidney friendly diet involves eating low
sodium, low potassium and low phosphorus food.
Sodium - You daily sodium intake should not exceed
2,000 mg (2 grams) per day. So, instead of using salt in cooking it is better to sprinkle your
food with little salt before eating.
Potassium
– Your daily Potassium intake should be less than 2,500 mg per day. You
can use the chart given below to monitor your daily potassium intake.
Phosphorous - Your daily phosphorus intake should be 800-1,000 mg per day. You can again use the given chart to monitor your daily phosphorus intake. In order to further reduce the amount of phosphorous from vegetables; it is better to boil your chopped veggies in excess water before cooking and through the excess water.
