The Truth About Fat: Why It’s Not Detrimental to Your Health | Dietician Priyanka

Carbohydrate, Proteins and Fat are three major components of food items. Carbohydrates are essential food nutrients that our body breaks down to  glucose which gives us energy. All cereals and milletes like wheat, rice, bajra, maize etc are rich source of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are also found in fruits, roots and tubers like potato. Caroot, Beetroot etc..

Proteins are called building blocks. They are found in every part of our body like muscle, bone, skin, nails and hair etc. All our enzymes, hormones and  hemoglobin that carries oxygen in your blood is made up of protein. Some of the protein rich food items include pulses, legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs, milk fish etc.

The third most important component of food item is Fat. They are also stored form of energy that our body uses during starvation. We need fat because it helps to  absorb vitamins, like vitamins A, D, E, and K. Fat gives you more energy for longer duration as compared to carbohydrates and protein. 1g of carbohydrates and protein gives you 4cal of energy where as 1g of fat gives you 9 calories.

When we eat high protein and low carbohydrate diet, our body uses protein for energy purpose, this is known as Protein sparing effect and fat is again stored for future use. But when we eat high fat and low carbohydrate diet our body uses fat to give us energy. High fat diet also increases our metabolism as our body really needs to work hard to digest fat. So high fat diet leads to healthy weight loss where our body uses fat as a main source of energy.

You may wonder how much weight you can expect to lose in the first week of High fat diet. This shift, during which your body uses carbohydrate as a main source of energy and switch to using fat, usually takes 2-7 days. However, for some people, it may take longer.

Many people notice dramatic weight loss in the first week of high fat diet, but most of this is due water loss. However, once your body is used to it, it starts using its own stored fat for energy and you will lose weight rapidly. A large part of brain uses fat for energy, so consuming high fat diet also boosts your brain power.

So if you are looking for weight loss, high fat diet helps to lose weight quickly if followed  in a healthy way. People who are involved in heavy exercises generally find it difficult to lose weight with a healthy balanced diet. But they may lose weight easily with high fat diet. High fat diet also have a positive effect on Diabetes, PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) and certain cancers.

But it should be noted that  you should always follow high fat diet with the recommendation of an expert, to prevent its side effects.
