Uncovering the Truth: What Doctors Won’t Tell You About High Blood Pressure | Dietician Priyanka

Hypertension is a very severe health condition and you'd never know without measuring your Blood Pressure. Unfortunately, this may be a silent killer. If left neglected, it can severely damage your quality of life and set the stage for heart condition, kidney complications, or a stroke.

Medicines can effectively lower your blood pressure. But the danger of long-term health consequences also depends on many other factors like your current vital sign, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. If these factors are not controlled you are likely to get heart attack within the next ten years.

"Hypertension led to 1.63 million deaths in India in the year 2016 alone and don’t think they are  those who cannot afford medicines or good hospital facility."

Our current thinking about treating high blood pressure is misguided, and even harmful. Sadly, the drugs used for controlling blood pressure can definitely increase our life expectancy but is not successful in improving the quality of life.

How Bill Clinton was trapped by modern medical science

If a former president of the US, Bill Clinton who is one of the most powerful persons in the world could become a victim of modern medical science, just imagine what would be the fate of the commoner . Medicines taking for long can only lead to future illness; this is very much evident from medical history of former US president Mr. Bill Clinton.

After getting four bypass surgeries when Bill Clinton was too sick from doctors and medicines , he could reverse his heart disease by following a heart healthy diet. By the top of 2011, he was healthy and young again. He could now travel widely round the world.

"So, everyone has the right to decide for themselves whether or not to take medicines for life time to lower their blood pressure. But before deciding to take medicines for high blood pressure you must ask your doctor about all the pros and cons of various treatment options."

When interviewed by CNN regarding his marvelous health recovery. He explained, “I went on essentially a plant-based diet. I live on beans, legumes, vegetables, fruits. No dairy. I drink almond milk mixed in with fruit when I start the day up. And it changed my whole metabolism and I lost 24 pounds and I got back to basically what I weighed in high school.

Side effects of High Blood Pressure medicines

Medicines that lower blood pressure tend to work well. But they don't necessarily treat the cause of the problem.  And no matter how safe they are, all drugs can have some unwanted or unintended side effects. Some common side effects of high blood pressure medicines include:

  • Erection problems
  • Nervousness
  • Feeling tired, weak, drowsy, or a lack of energy
  • Headache
  • Weight loss or gain without trying

So, instead of using only medicines for reducing blood pressure, we should also try to find out what causes high blood pressure in the first place.

Example of Mr. X & Mr. Y

I have a patient Mr. X, who is having high Blood Pressure since 12 years. He decided to take Blood Pressure medicines and started with one medicine/ day but now his dose has increased to 4 medicine/day and still his Blood pressure is out of control. Along with this he also takes medicines for his blood sugar & Cholesterol.

His vital organs are getting damaged now. His eyes are getting damaged, uric acid and creatinine is also increasing which is sign of kidney damage. Now Doctor has advised him to control Blood Pressure through diet as they can’t increase dose further.

I have another patient  Mr.Y, who  is taking Blood pressure medicines since 10 years. He is not overweight but still his Blood pressure  is high. He tried both allopathy and ayurvedic treatment but nothing worked for him. Finally has decided not to use blood pressure medicines.

He has modified his lifestyle: He goes for walk every day, eats a balanced diet and doesn't drink much alcohol. He feels healthy now and doesn't want to have to take medicine every day.  He tells himself: "If my blood pressure suddenly goes up in a few years, I can still start taking medication then.

"No treatment is successful without diet. If you decide to use food as a medicine you don’t need to take medicines for long. Also you will be able to save your vital organs from getting damaged."

When is medication necessary?

If your blood pressure is high for the first time it can often be reduced by losing weight, healthy diet, taking natural or herbal supplements, eating less salt and improving lifestyle. If that isn't effective enough, treatment with antihypertensive medication is considered.

If you have very high blood pressure, the risk of cardiovascular disease is so great that doctors usually recommend immediate treatment with medication. This is the case for systolic blood pressure levels over 180 mmHg.

Even if you are taking medicines don’t forget to work on your diet and lifestyle which can not only help you to eliminate your medicines but will also prevent your vital organs from getting damaged.
