Top Anti-Diabetic Foods: Dietician Priyanka’s Guide to Eating Right for Diabetes | Bite And Diet

Effects of various herbs and plants are reviewed for their anti-diabetic functions, including those traditionally used amongst many cultures for hundreds of years .

 Common ones are:

1.     Aloevera
2.     Blueberry extract
3.     Bitter melon
4.     Cinnamon
5.     Fenugreek
6.     Ginger
7.     Okra

Aloevera:

Aloevera may help to lower

  •  Fasting blood glucose (FBG)
  • hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), which shows the 3-month average of the amount of blood glucose attached to the hemoglobin in your red blood cells

Blueberry extract

Blueberries are rich in polyphenols, which include anthocyanin bioactive compounds. Epidemiological evidence indicates that incorporating blueberries into the diet may lower the danger of developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM)

Bitter melon

Bitter melon helps to lower blood glucose because it has properties that act like insulin, which helps bring glucose into the cells for energy. The consumption of bitter melon can also help your cells in utilizing glucose and move it to your liver, muscles, and fat.

Cinnamon

Several small studies have found that  cinnamon helps to lower blood sugar levels by lowering insulin resistance.

In one study, volunteers ate about half a teaspoon of cinnamon for 40 days. The researchers found that cinnamon reduces cholesterol by about 18% and blood sugar levels by 24%. You should avoid taking cinnamon if you have liver damage. Be careful If you have liver problems, because large amounts of cinnamon may make them worse.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek seeds helps to improve most of the metabolic symptoms associated with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes  by lowering blood glucose levels and improving glucose tolerance.

Studies have found different results with different doses of fenugreek seed powder

  • 100 grams of  fenugreek seed powder to the daily diet of patients with insulin-dependent or type 1 diabetes not only reduces fasting blood glucose level but  also lowers total cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • 15 grams of  fenugreek seed powder into a meal eaten by people with type 2 diabetes helps to reduce  post-meal blood glucose.
  • 2.5 grams of fenugreek twice a day for three months lowered blood sugar levels in people with mild, but not severe, type 2 diabetes.

Ginger

Using about 4 grams of ginger per day in your daily diet may help to lower your blood sugar levels and regulate insulin production. So even if you are taking medicines for diabetes you must include ginger in moderate amount in your daily diet.

Okra

Drinking “Okra or lady’s fingers water” is a quick and simple way to derive the benefits of okra without eating it.. The drink is prepared by soaking okra pods in water for 6-7 hours or overnight. Some of the valuable nutrients in the skin and seed pods will be absorbed into the water.

You can also cut the okra into thin slices instead of soaking the pods whole. Preparing okra water this way, may make the drink slightly bitter.

Okra peel You can prepare okra peel even at home by using a handheld kitchen grater or a lemon zester. You can eat okra peel as much as you want, about half of a teaspoon of okra peel is more than enough for your body to benefit.

Be sure to talk to an expert before adding this to your treatment regimen. Together you can determine the best dosage for you, as well as discuss any potential side effects.
